How to Search Civil Dockets
Two portals serve Clarke County civil case lookup. Just One Look sells one-case access, and Alacourt.com works on a subscription. Search the full division-coded number from a summons, pleading, or notice. With only a party name, check the case style, court, filing date, and case type. Only then should you call a result a match. Probate estates and guardianships stay with the Clarke County Probate Judge. They fall outside the Circuit Clerk's civil docket search.
Free public viewing is open at the clerk counter. The counter also handles phone, mail, and copy requests. A sound search sequence:
- Identify Circuit Civil, District Civil, Small Claims, Domestic Relations, or another listed division.
- Copy the full case number, including CV, DV, or SM.
- Search the state case system and verify all matching party roles.
- Read the newest filing, order, setting, and disposition entries.
- Ask the clerk for a missing document, archived file, or certified judgment.
Clarke County Civil Docket Divisions
One Clarke County Circuit Clerk manages several civil record tracks. Circuit Civil covers general civil matters inside Circuit Court jurisdiction. District Civil and Small Claims are limited forums. Domestic Relations, Child Support, and Protection from Abuse records follow their own division routes. Each may carry added privacy limits. Treat the case code as a routing clue only, never as a result.
| Division | Common Code | Record Route |
|---|---|---|
| Circuit Civil | CV | Circuit Clerk and Alabama case systems |
| Domestic Relations | DV | Circuit Clerk, with access limits where applicable |
| Small Claims | SM | District Court division through the same clerk |
| Probate | Separate system | Probate Judge and free account-based portal |
Do not borrow a civil value limit or filing fee from another Alabama county. Those rules can change, and the Clarke County sources point readers to the current court materials.
Clarke County Civil Docket Portal
Just One Look gives paid, case-by-case, read-only access. Alacourt serves subscribers who need repeat access to state trial-court details and available images. AlaFile works differently. It accepts electronic filings and service copies from registered users, yet registration does not make it a free public civil docket search. AlacourtPlus sits behind the counter as the clerk and judge processing layer. For no cost, a visitor may inspect the public electronic docket and public filings at the Clarke County Circuit Clerk's office during regular hours.
What a Civil Docket Shows
An action summary opens with the case header: division, filing date, status, judge or court, and party roles. Its chronology may then list the complaint or petition, summons, service return, answer, counterclaim, motion, order, notice of setting, continuance, trial, dismissal, judgment, collection activity, and appeal. Document images may appear when stored electronically and open to the user. Not every docket entry has a matching image.
| Case Number | The unique full number, usually including a division code such as CV. |
|---|---|
| Parties | Plaintiff and defendant, or petitioner and respondent, with public attorney data where entered. |
| Service | Process issued and the return reported by the server. |
| Filings and Orders | Pleadings, motions, judge's rulings, notices, and public image links. |
| Disposition | Dismissal, judgment, appeal, or another trial-level result, with date and status. |
The summary is only an index. A label such as "order entered" cannot reveal the signed order's full terms, so request that document whenever the wording matters.
Clarke County Civil Docket Sequence
Clarke County civil docket entries often follow a plain sequence: Complaint › Service › Answer › Motion › Setting › Order or Judgment. Not every case uses every step. A party may file a counterclaim. The court may enter a scheduling order, send a matter to mediation, grant a motion, set a trial, or record a dismissal before trial.
- Service return
- The server's report of what happened after process was issued.
- Default judgment
- A judgment entered after a required response or appearance fails, subject to court rules.
- Disposition
- A system label that says the trial court recorded an outcome.
- Execution
- A post-judgment process used to enforce a judgment where allowed.
"Disposed" does not say who won. A dismissal may or may not reach the merits, and a default entry may come before the final judgment. Read the dispositive order, the document that actually resolves a claim.
Types of Civil Cases on the Docket
Clarke County civil dockets hold several kinds of noncriminal disputes and petitions. The division you pick controls the case number, the filing route, and the access level. The Circuit Clerk's official structure names Civil, Domestic, Child Support, and other divisions. Local court pages separately describe Circuit Civil, District Civil, and Small Claims.
- General Circuit Civil claims and property disputes
- District Civil matters within that court's jurisdiction
- Small Claims cases filed in the limited forum
- Domestic Relations and Child Support matters
- Protection from Abuse petitions and related public entries where access is allowed
Probate administration is not just another civil division. Estates and guardianships live in the Clarke County Probate Judge's distinct records system, unless a lawful transfer or appeal opens a separate state-court file.
Clarke County Civil Docket Probate Split
The Probate Court shares the 114 Court Street address but not the Circuit Clerk's custody or portal. Its judge also performs the clerk function for estates, guardianships, and other statutory Probate work. The Probate search requires a free account, and available documents cost nothing. Call (251) 275-3251 when an estate name or guardianship does not belong in a Clarke County civil docket search. A name absent from Circuit Civil may still be in the right county, just filed in the wrong record system.
Clarke County Small Claims Dockets
The Clarke County court system posts a dedicated Small Claims information page covering procedure and forms for these cases.
That page reflects a separate docket route inside District Court, even though the Circuit Clerk administers the record. Confirm the current jurisdiction and fees rather than borrowing a stale threshold. The Alabama Rules of Civil Procedure supply the statewide procedural frame for civil filings.
Those rules govern procedure. The docket shows the events the Clarke County clerk actually recorded in the specific case.
Settings and Hearings on Civil Dockets
Settings drive a Clarke County civil docket. The case action summary logs notices of setting, motion hearings, pretrial events, trials, and continuances in date order. The clerk posts no standalone daily calendar. So work from the newest setting in the summary. Check it against the latest written or electronic notice you received, and call the Circuit Clerk if the date, time, court, or location still seems unclear.
A continuance simply moves a setting. The first date stays in the docket history. A later cancellation or reset can control over an older entry, which is why competing dates trip people up. The Clarke County court calendar reference sorts out those conflicts and courthouse postings. Clerk staff will report recorded settings, though they cannot advise a party whether or how to seek a delay.
Clarke County Civil Docket Judgments
A portal entry is not a certified judgment. The case action summary may say a judgment or dismissal was entered. But no image shows. Write down the exact date and entry label. Then call the Clarke County Circuit Clerk and ask whether the document is public, electronically imaged, paper, archived, or blocked by an access restriction. Say whether you want a plain or certified copy. Ask for a quote before sending payment.
Under Rule 30, the clerk can certify a reproduction only when the original is filed or recorded. The rule also permits an electronic signature and seal, requires payment or an obligation to pay before release, and puts mail postage on the requester. No published local schedule lists Clarke County's current copy and certification fees, so confirm amounts with the clerk instead of using another county's prices.
After a notice of appeal, the official Alabama Rules of Appellate Procedure describe the next level.
An appeal may add transmission and later remand entries to the Clarke County civil docket. The appellate court, though, keeps its own separate record.
Clarke County Civil Docket Fees
Under the 2025 rules, viewing the public electronic docket at the courthouse costs nothing. Copies are another matter. Rule 30 allows copy and certification charges set through the authorized state process, and Clarke County posts no current fee schedule. Clarke County posts no current fee schedule. Call before sending funds. Ask about a page estimate, certification cost, accepted payment, any archive charge, and mail postage.
Rule 30 also lets the clerk hand out no-charge copies to parties, attorneys, and government users at its discretion. Do not assume that courtesy applies to every request.
Public Access to Civil Dockets
Free access exists at the courthouse. The Alabama Rules of Court-Record Privacy and Confidentiality guarantee no-charge viewing of the electronic docket and public court records at the clerk's office during regular hours. For remote lookup, Just One Look and Alacourt offer paid routes. Copies may carry fees, and mail delivery adds postage. A quick call to the clerk can confirm the division, case number, current access method, and copy process.
Public access: the 2025 court-record rules govern free clerk-office viewing, remote access, and confidential data. Rule 33 preserves circuit-clerk inspection rights tied to Alabama public-record law.
Some filings get narrower access. Confidential domestic, child, Protection from Abuse, juvenile-linked, sealed, or sensitive matters may be restricted. Even then, a public event label can stay visible while its document image is withheld. Ask the clerk whether a redacted version is public.
Clarke County Civil Docket Privacy
Domestic Relations is one of the Clarke County Circuit Clerk's named divisions. Division custody alone does not make every filing broadly public. The official Clarke County Domestic Relations page offers a local route into that office's civil docket information.
That local route does not mean sensitive case images are open. Identity, party status, a rule, or a court order may control access to a specific file.
At the courthouse, the Circuit Clerk counter provides free viewing of public case details. For copies by mail, send the division, case number, party names, entry date, the exact document, your certification choice, and a return arrangement to P.O. Box 921, Grove Hill, AL 36451. Call (251) 275-3163 before mailing or faxing to (251) 275-3271. The county clerk page also publishes (251) 275-3363. One caution applies. A formal public-record request cannot override court confidentiality rules. Nor can it override a sealing order.
